Storyboard Text

  • My name is Dr. Dawn Wright. They call me "Deep Sea Dawn" because I've had an affinity for the ocean since I was a child. In fact, at age eight, I decided I wanted to become an ocean geologist.
  • My work has allowed me to explore places that many have never seen before, including Antarctica and below the Sea of Japan.
  • I grew up in Hawaii, which made the ocean sacred to me. I learned that we need to give the ocean the same attention and level of observation we gave to the moon.
  • I am the chief scientist of the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), and one of our top projects included mapping the entire ocean floor around the world.
  • Having a complete understanding on how oceans work and what they look like is critical. Because they are absorbing most of the greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere, it is crucial to understand oceans in order to fight climate change.
  • We must believe in science and fight for our oceans. If we can't keep our oceans safe and clean, and we let climate change run wild, we won't be the same country anymore.
