- What is going on?
- What should I write to my dad? Oh I will write something about the soldiers.
- What did Mr. Milton tell you?
- People are wondering what is going on in the war, and Tennessee gets in contact with Washington during Christmas time. General Sherman gave the city of Savannah to Lincoln as a Christmas present. The Army of Tennessee turned North to join Grant and his troops.
- "Peace will not be a perfect pearl."
- Ed's youngest son wrote from South Carolina, about how surprised he was about the soldier's carelessness about other people's property and possessions. Ed was worried that his son would not come out of the army the same way he went in. Matt and Tom remarked that the soldiers thought that just because they were in a war they were war heroes, but in reality they were just destroying property.
- Matt and Ellen were both getting nervous that Jethro would leave just like Bill because as he was getting older he was starting to look and act more like Bill. Ellen wanted Jethro to talk to her about what Mr. Milton had said about the war, but Jethro did not know how to put it into his mom's way of speaking.
- Jenny and I want you to come with us.
- I have to help with the farm.
- Ross Milton had told Jethro to not expect peace to be a perfect pearl. He had said that the scars from the war will take a long time to heal. Milton also said that the thirteenth amendment will not abolish people's feelings towards slavery.
- Finally in April, news came that the war was over. Jethro decided that he wanted to shake Abraham Lincoln's hand. Then news reached the Creightons that the president had been assassinated. Jethro never really came to terms with Lincoln's death and spends most of his time by himself grieving.
- One day when Jethro was by himself crying he heard someone approach him. When he turned around he saw it was Shad. Shad says that Jenny is at the house and very excited to see him. Shad announces that after summer him and Jenny are leaving to college because his uncle got him a teaching position, he also says that they are bringing Jethro so he can study.
