- In 1095, Pope Urban II called for a crusade to free the Holy Land. People answered the pope's call with enthusiasm and started for the Holy Land. This was the start of the many crusades to come.
- We should start a crusade on the Holy Land! Everyone should come and join!
- 150,000 people hurried to join the crusade. It was a long journey and most didn't reach the Holy Land. Most of the people on the crusades were peasants who wanted a new life.

- We are setting off to the holy land!
- Most were killed by the Turks before reaching their destination. Despite setbacks, the first crusade was a success. They took the Muslim kingdoms by surprise.

- The second crusade failed. The crusaders were unable to gain support. This fall provoked the third crusade. Saladin and Richard signed a truce that ended the Third Crusade.

- In 1204, looters stormed Constantinople.They smashed Christian icons, stole relics, and attacked women. The pope was furious. The Byzantines never forgave the Catholic Christians.

- In 1212, there was a popular crusade movement through France and Germany. Most never got father than Italy. Although several more crusades were launched, they were forced our of the Holy Land. In 1291, the Muslims defeated the last crusader state.
