I've know for a while now, but Willy has been trying to kill himself.
Biff, Happy, and Linda are talking. Biff and Happy think that Linda doesn't know how crazy Willy has become. However, she actually knows more than them. She tells them that he has been trying to commit suicide, which is new information for the boys because previously they only thought that Willy had just started to talk himself a lot.

Linda tells her sons that, Willy's accident wasn't actually an accident. A witness said that Willy actually turned into the railing and crashed deliberately, apparently the only thing that saved him was the shallow water under the bridge. This shows that Willy's mental state is much worse than the boys previously thought.

Linda also tells the boys that she found a plastic tube behind the fuse box and a new nipple on the gas pipe that is connected to the furnace. She explains that Willy has also been trying to kill himself by inhaling CO2 from the furnace. The elaborates on the fact that Willy's mental state is actually really bad.

These suicide attempts are your fault, Biff. You need to do something about it...change your ways.
Often, parents feel that if their kids aren't successful then they weren't good parents. Biff was always Willy's favorite child and now that he isn't successful, Willy is extremely upset. Linda sees this, and in the play, she basically tells Biff that Willy'ssuicide attempts are his fault.

I will change! I promise...I will!
Biff was guilted into changing by his mother. He obviously wants to save his father, so he tells his mother that he will try to get a better job, and become more successful. Linda effectively convinces Biff that his success can save his father.
