  • What is shifiting cultivation ?
  • It is a primitive method of farming. It is also know as slash and burn agriculture.
  • The people clear the forest by cutting and burning an area. The ash produced by burning vegetation increases the fertility of the soil.
  • Ok so which all crops are grown in this method and for how long?
  • Mostly, tuber crops such as tapioca, cassava, manioc and yams are grown along with millets, maize, bens and bananas. Crops are grown in the same patch of land for two to three years after which the land becomes infertile.
