At age 12 Dorthea Dix left her abusive home to go live with her grandmother in Boston.By 14 she had become a teacher and had her own curriculum, focusing on ethical living and social sciences. She wanted more so in 1821 she opended a school for girls in boston. She had to leave teaching do to periods of bad illnesses.
After some time to heal, she started teaching Sunday school at a correctional facility. She saw all of the inhuman treatment and knew she needed to help. She saw that the mentally ill youth were unclothed and left in unheated dark rooms. So Deathora set off and traveled for 2 years observing like facilitys. She knew her next step was to pass a bill to stop this treatment., and make asylums for the mentally ill. She was able to pass this law in 3 states!

She started mental hospitals in 32 states and even countries all around the world. She made sure that the staff were well trained and intelligent. She continued to advocate for the rest of her life and became a civil war nurse. She passed away in one of the hospitals she made.
