- The Bench by the Window”Listening Type: Active ListeningMaya dropped her backpack onto the cafeteria bench and sighed loudly. “Ugh… today was terrible,” she said, staring at her lunch like she wasn’t hungry at all.Jordan closed his notebook right away and turned toward her. “What happened?” he asked. He wasn’t distracted he was looking right at her and paying attention.“I studied for the math test for hours,” Maya said. “But when I sat down to take it, my mind just… went blank. I think I totally failed.”Jordan nodded. “So you worked hard, but when the test started, everything disappeared from your head?” he said, making sure he understood.“Yes!” Maya said, her eyes widening. “And then Mr. Lopez came over and asked if I needed help, which made me feel even worse.”

- Jordan didn’t interrupt. He waited until she finished talking. Then he said, “That sounds really frustrating. You tried your best, and it didn’t show.”Maya looked up at him. “Exactly.”Jordan thought for a moment. “What part was the hardest? Maybe we can figure it out together.”Maya finally smiled a little. “The word problems. They always confuse me.”“Okay,” Jordan said. “We can go over some after lunch. And one bad test doesn’t erase all the work you did.”Maya took a deep breath. “Thanks for listening. I really needed someone to talk to.”“I’m here,” Jordan said. “Tell me what kind of word problems mess you up.”Maya started explaining, and Jordan kept listening asking questions, repeating what she said, and showing he understood. By the time lunch ended, she looked a lot less stressed than when she sat down.
