French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher, René Descartes was born on March 31 1596, in La Haye, France. His parents were Joachim Descartes and Jeanne Brochard
René was one of five children. His mother had died during child birth when René was one years old, leaving their father to watch over them.
Joachim then left his children with their maternal grandmother and headed to Rennes, France, where he got remarried.
Sadly, René Descartes died due to Pneumonia in Stockholm, Sweden on February 11, 1650
In 1606, René attended the Jesuit college of La Fleche, following a usual course of studies, in which he studied Aristotle. Then, he became a gentlemen soldier in 1608 in Breda, Netherlands. There, he met a man named Isaac Beeckman, who influenced him to study science and mathematics.
He also developed a system called the Cartesian Dualism, which states that the body and mind are two different things that interact with each other.
