Storyboard Text

  • French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher, René Descartes was born on March 31 1596, in La Haye, France. His parents were Joachim Descartes and Jeanne Brochard
  • René was one of five children. His mother had died during child birth when René was one years old, leaving their father to watch over them.
  • Joachim then left his children with their maternal grandmother and headed to Rennes, France, where he got remarried.
  • Sadly, René Descartes died due to Pneumonia in Stockholm, Sweden on February 11, 1650 
  • In 1606, René attended the Jesuit college of La Fleche, following a usual course of studies, in which he studied Aristotle. Then, he became a gentlemen soldier in 1608 in Breda, Netherlands. There, he met a man named Isaac Beeckman, who influenced him to study science and mathematics.
  • He also developed a system called the Cartesian Dualism, which states that the body and mind are two different things that interact with each other.
