My mom gave birth to me on October 15, 2002. My mom's friends and family helped her out as my father was out of the picture and with his current wife who had also just had a baby, my older brother by just a few days.

My mom was in the Army. For women who just gave birth, the military gives a 4 month grace period before deploying. They gave my mom just past that to be with me. I was 4 months and 15 days old when my mom was deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

She was assigned the first decontamination of the war. She still tells me about the plumes of colors coming from a source of chemicals. When an all-clear sign was given, she was one of few who left their hazmat gear on. She didn't trust what she had seen.
Besides the site of the chemicals was a field of sunflowers growing in desert soil. In the field was a crashed and deteriorating airplane. We both didn't know when she was telling me that sunflowers are known for taking radioactive elements out of soil.

It's gonna be ok mommy!
Blah Blah...Bad news..Blah Blah...Surgery
My mom was deployed for 5 months. She was scared that I had forgotten her because she had left me so young and I was still so young. However, I remembered. She also made things work with my dad who divorced his wife and married my mom. The story for that is more complicated.

As I grew older, my mom kept getting sick. She felt weakened. Doctors couldn't say what was wrong. All they knew was that black masses kept forming in my mom. I was so worried for my mom each time. I was scared she would die.

Do you need anything else mamma? I can bring you leftover soup?
Thankfully she didn't die and hopefully, she will live a very long time. But as I grew up she kept getting surgery after surgery. Every time there would be something new wrong or something old that resurfaced.
My father and my siblings kept taking care of her and trying to make her feel better.
Can you bring me an extra blanket?
