- Hazel meets Augustus at a local support group for those who are battling cancer.
- "No, no, no, not your cancer story, your real story. Your interests, hobbies, passions, weird fetishes.. The first thing that pops in your head."
- "Oblivion."
- "An Imperial Affliction. It's a novel. It's my favorite novel."
- He meets up with her outside of the church and invites her to hang with him.
- Augustus reads the novel to surprise Hazel; whatever is important to her, is important to him.
- "That's the thing about pain. It demands to be felt."
- "You just ruined this whole thing! You were doing really well, too."
- "You're quoting my book..."
- Augustus emails the author of An Imperial Affliction since he knowsHazel could never reach him.
- Hazel wakes up the morning after to a certain email from a certain somebody..
- "Augustus!?"

- Hazel was inspired by this effort to email Van Houten once again.
- A few days later, Gus takes Hazel out on a date, where he invites her to go meet Van Houten with him in Amsterdam.
- *TYPING*
- "But I too have an interest in meeting Peter Van Houten and it wouldn't make much sense to meet him without the girl who introduced me to his book, now would it?"
