On February 15th 1898, The sinking of the Maine was caused by an explosion because of gun magazines, people thought Spain caused it. It blew up 3 quarters of the ship and some crew, it was pretty much caused by an accident but Spain was blamed for it. Maine was also sent there to Spain to protect the U.S. interest and Cuba was struggling for independence, fueled by the perceived brutality of Spanish rule. The explosion happened in Havana Harbor, it was also to rid the Western Hemisphere of European colonial powers.

Effects
On april 20th 1898, the government from Spain declared war on the United States, it was called the Spanish American War. After they fought and fought and fought, Spain granted them Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. They established them as a major player in international politics. The U.S. emerged from the war a world war. It also then forced the American people and the U.S. government to face the question of interviewing in a foreign war.
