One of the ways erosion impacts human life are rock slides. A rock slide is the sliding motion of rock along a sloping surface. Mass Wasting is the failure and downslope movement of rock or unconsolidated materials in response to gravity. When a mass of sediment becomes completely saturated with water, the mass loses strength, to the extent that the grains are pushed apart, and it will flow, even on a gentle slope. This is known as mud flow.
Erosion and how it impacts us
Erosion also causes the soil to become less fertile, which also affects humans. With less fertile soil, there is less agricultural production, increased pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers, and degraded lands are also often less able to hold onto water, which can worsen flooding. The increase sediment in the water can also lead to water quality changing, less sea production with fish and vegetation, and less usable water for farms.
Erosion and how it impacts us
Climate change plays a role in the continued increase in erosion. Firstly, with higher rates of rainfall, more sediment is washed into our waterways. Secondly, with raising water levels, there will be more coastal erosion, causing us to lose more beach area and can wash away homes built on the coast.
