"You've been lying to me this whole time. A thief and a liar and... I don't even know you. I don't even know my own daughter. Why did you do this? Why on earth would you do all these things?" (Glasgow, 269)I think that their mom symbolizes the fact how parents can be so misunderstanding of their children at times. Sometimes they say they do, but they don't really know what goes on at school and even in their own minds. Yeah of course parents have also gone through high school, but that was years before us, and things have changed.I also believe that their mom represents the financial struggles and other internal emotions that adults face every day. For example, the tough decision that she had to make about what to do with the mill in their city.

Daniel
"It scares me. Every time I have to look at the scar, I'm afraid those cells might be working again, while I'm reading The Scarlet Letter for the umpteenth time or buying Max DeVos chocolate from the wobbly vending machine." (Glasgow, 227)I think that Daniel symbolizes the reality of fighting cancer and the life after it's been beaten. Throughout the story, Daniel is described as always being seen in a scarf, and everyone seems to make fun of him for it. When in reality, nobody actually knows what he's been put through. He's ashamed of it, scared of the fact that one wrong word about his past could make someone run away or disgusted. He wears those scarves to make himself forget his past, so that he doesn't have to put up with it whenever he looks in the mirror, because cancer has changed his life forever.

Liza Hernandez
"My parents are gone. Poof. One day there, one day not. But when they were there, I propped them up. Made dinner. Took care of my brothers. Shopped. Counted pennies. Hid what I could so they wouldn't sell it for drugs. They sold all of our shoes once. I mowed four lawns to earn enough money to buy us more at the Salvation Army thrift store." (Glasgow, 283)I think that Liza symbolizes the mental health effects that can happen to kids when absent parents are involved. Liza's whole life she's lived without them, and even when they were there, they were doing drugs and never took care of her and her siblings. This caused her to be more aggressive and unaware of things she says and does. She has trouble forming genuine relationships with friends, she doesn't do that well in school, and has tons of other emotional problems that she fights.
