  • Joey Ward
  • "So I left. Found Noah out by the trailers in back, you know, where they do overflow history and stuff. It just... I just needed my feelings to stop. I feel sick. I got to get out of here..." Glasgow, 235I think that Joey symbolizes the effects that drug use can have on adolescents/human beings in general. His actions throughout the book resemble how hard temptation can be on people when it comes to drugs that make you forget all things troubling you. Joey also represents the importance of getting sober and the bad things that could happen if you don't.

  • Emory Ward
  • "You don't see me. You've never seen me. You see Maddie, and you see Joey, but you don't see me. You never have." Glasgow, 269I think that Emory symbolizes the amount of loneliness and unimportance someone can feel in life. Throughout the book she is constantly isolating herself, she barely has any friends and feels like her older siblings are always way more important than she ever will be. She sees herself as a failure, like she can't ever do anything right. Teenagers around the world can feel these type of emotions any time, it can happen to anyone. More awareness should be brought to topics like these.

  • Gage Galt
  • "This must be what your brother felt like, huh? All these drugs in me. Can't feel anything. Maybe that's my story now. Maybe I'll end up under the bridge, just another ghostie. This was all I had, Em. I'm not smart, like you." Glasgow, 251I think Gage symbolizes the way that some kids don't have anything to hang onto in their lives except for sports. They play and play and play to distract themselves from what they actually have going on; a way of coping. When gage fractures his arm, he is no longer able to pitch again for the rest of his life. This conveys on a deeper level how much sports can really define a person and mean so much to them.
