Storyboard Text

  • The British supported the native american resistance. This resistance was started by Tecumseh, who unified the tribes to fight the american invaders in their home. The British provided their resistance with weapons because they wanted to slow the growth of America.
  • The British stopped American trade ships with blockades and invaded them. In response, James Madison passed the Embargo Act, which stopped all trade from other countries. This act was only worse for America, and did not prevent the war.
  • Treaty Of Ghent
  • In addition to invading american ships, the British impressed the american sailors on the ships. This means that they would capture the sailors and force them to work for the British.
  • During the Battle of Thames, General William Henry Harrison defeats Tecumseh. The British helped the Natives in the beginning, but later retreated. Even when the British retreated, the Natives fought on. After this battle, the Native resistance was over because Tecumseh, the organizer, had died.
  • On August 24, 1814, Britain attacked Washington DC. The British set the white house and the US capitol on fire. Though many things burned down, Dolly Madison was able to save some historical documents from the White House.
  • The Treaty of Ghent was created on December 24th, 1814 in Belgium, and it officially ended the war of 1812. Even though the war was over, there was another battle in America due to slow postal services.
