- 24 male students were randomly assigned to be prisoner or guard. prisoners were arrested at home and taken to the makeshift prison. Prisoners were strip-searched and deloused. They had to wear a uniform a stocking cap and ankle chain. They were only allowed to refer to each other by number.
- Day 4
- On the second morning the prisoners rebelled and barricaded themselves in the cells. Guards forced in and strip-searched prisoners. Put the ring-leaders into solitary confinement and those who were less involved we given washing privileges.
- Day 5
- The guards became more brutal, refusing to let prisoners leave the cells.

- At night one of the prisoners had a mental break down
- The guards made prisoners clean toilets with their bare hands. At night when the guards thought prisoners weren't looking they sexually humiliated.
- The guards power was almost total and prisoners obeyed without question. Christina Maslach who was a visiting postgraduate strongly objected and convinced the researchers to stop the study.
