One major theme of The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street by Rod Serling. is that Mankind is its own worst enemy. For example at the end of page 679. Charlie raises the gun and without warning he pulls the trigger and kills his dear old neighbor Pete Van Horn. That could've gone better by Charlie asking, Who's there? Pete Van Horn could've responded, Its me Pete Van Horn. If that were to happen no one would've died. Another example is; When violence ensured and when everybody tried to find a scapegoat. The people used to be good friends and then they all betrayed each other. My last example is when the aliens said it themselves. They said, With a few variations . They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find and its themselves. That's why the theme I chose is, Mankind is its own worst enemy.
