- Jing-Mei is asked to take her mother's seat in the Joy Luck Club after her mother's death. Originally, the four women met in a San Francisco refugee center after moving to the United States during World War II. They inform June that her mother's twins who were abandoned in China are adults and it's up to her to travel and find them.

- I have helped you with your business so much, but you can't even give me a raise or promotion!
- During Christmas, someone at church dressed as Santa Claus and handed out Christmas gifts. One of Waverly's brothers got a chess set that was missing two pieces. Waverly convinced her brother to play by offering to use her lifesavers as the missing pieces. Waverly gained interest and started playing with an old man in the park who taught her many new strategies. Waverly began to draw attention because of her young age and she became a national champion at age 9.

- Rose and her family take a trip to the beach and try and act like an average American family. Rose's mom asks her to watch her four younger brothers. The three brothers that were only a few years younger than Rose were able to entertain themselves, but Bing was very adventurous. The three brothers get in a fight and distract Rose from keeping an eye on Bing. Rose looks up and watches Bing fall into the water without a splash. The search for Bing's body was unsuccessful and the whole family felt responsible for his death.

- Lena and her husband Harold strictly keep track of the money they each spend. Harold offers Lena to move in with him so she would pay half of his apartment rent and he can use the money to pay for his firm. Lena always gives Harold very good advice and suggestions towards his projects, but he won't promote her. Lena's mother visits and informs Lena that Harold is being unfair. Lena finally confronts Harold which causes a little argument.
- An-Mei and her mother travel to the household of a rich merchant named Wu Tsing. Her mother lived with him as his "fourth wife." One day he returned with another wife who replaced her mother. Wu Tsing's second and third wives return from their summer homes. The second wife was very manipulative and took An-Mei's mother's baby as her own. Two days before the lunar new year, An-Mei's mother committed suicide.
- Jing-Mei talks about her trip to China to meet her half-sisters. She is in China for the first time and feels at home, but she realizes that she never has known exactly what it means to be Chinese. Jing-Mei's father tells her aunt the story about her mother's twins and how she begged other refugees to take her babies. Jing-Mei is very nervous to tell her sisters about her mother's story.
