The Monkey's Paw
The first man had his three wishes. Yes,” was the reply, “I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.” This quote from Major Morris is ominous. It makes the reader question why this person wished for death. The warning falls on deaf ears though and the Whites still want the paw regardless.
Conclusion
The last was so horrible and so simian that he gazed at it in amazement. This detail from the text increases the tension of the story by adding an otherworldly quality to the scene. Herbert seeing the face foreshadows bad things coming for him.
Conclusion Continued
There are in a way two morals or main ideas to this story. One is to be careful what you wish for and the other is to not wish for more than you need. In the story the monkey's paw takes its power out on the characters because they use it to gain wealth rather than being thankful for what they have.
The conclusion begins with Mr. and Mrs. White tossing the paw into the ocean. They are grief stricken by this point and depressed.
The paw washes up on a beach where a young woman sits. She appears to be looking longingly at the sea hoping for some answer to some question we don't know. She picks up the paw and stares at it contemplating what to do next.
