- When the bus finally arrives at the station, its air brakes hiss in protest, the driver says over the microphone, "Fifteen minutes, folks. That's all we've got." She had fifteen minutes to make a decision about her life. She examines herself in a small mirror and smooths her hair. If they're present. She enters the terminal unsure of what to expect. None of the thousand scenes she's imagined have prepared her for what she sees.

- A banner emblazoned across the terminal's entire wall reads, "Welcome Back! Her father falls out of the crowd of cheers and well-wishers. She looks out through the tears quivering like hot mercury in her eyes and begins the memorised speech. he cuts her off
- "Dad, I'm sorry. I know… "Dad, I'm sorry. I know…."."
- "Be quiet, child. We don't have time for that. There is no time for apologies. "A banquet awaits you at home," you'll be late for the party!
- she lies awake one night listening for footsteps. She no longer considers herself to be a powerful woman. She feels like a young child abandoned in a dark, unwelcoming city. She starts whimpering. She has no money in her pockets and is starving. She requires help. Under the newspapers she has piled on top of her coat, she pulls her legs snugly up beneath her and shivers. she remembers her comfortable bed and food she used to be given at home and thought to herself that maybe life at home wasn't as bad as she thought.
