- A frightened young woman named Helen Stoner visits Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in London. She fears for her life after hearing a mysterious whistle at night—the same sound her sister Julia heard before dying two years earlier. Helen explains their strange living conditions under her violent stepfather, Dr. Roylott, in a country house filled with wild animals and gypsies. Julia’s final words were, “It was the band! The speckled band!”

- Holmes and Watson travel to Helen’s house while Dr. Roylott is away. They inspect the bedrooms and discover oddities: a bed nailed to the floor, a non-working bell rope above it, and an air vent connecting Julia’s room to Dr. Roylott’s. Holmes suspects these details are part of a deadly plan and devises a trap by hiding in Helen’s room overnight.

- In the middle of the night, Holmes hears a whistle and strikes at the bell rope. Suddenly, a scream is heard from Dr. Roylott’s room. They rush in and find him dead, with a poisonous speckled snake around his head. Holmes explains how the doctor used the snake to murder Julia and planned the same for Helen. Justice is served—by the very creature Dr. Roylott used to kill.
