- Out from the marshes Grendel came hoping to kill anyone in Herot. He broke into the hall and saw the many sleeping warriors and young soldiers. Grendel snatched at the first gear he came to and ripped him apart.
- Grendel then clutched at Beowulf with his claws and instantly seized himself. His hand was trapped in Beowulf’s hard grip. They battled until Beowulf ripped Grendel’s arm off. Grendel escaped to his den wounded, only to die, to wait for the end of all his days.
- In the morning, crowds surrounded Herot. They gaped with no sense of sorrow for Grendel’s suffering. Then the young and old rejoiced.
- Grendel’s monster mother, in grief of her son, next attacks Herot and carries off in her claws Hrothgar’s closest friend. Beowulf is once again called, and fully armed and carrying the sword Hrunting, he goes to the lake where Grendel’s mother is.
- After swimming for hours, Beowulf was clutched at by Grendel’s mother. They were battling when Beowulf swung his sword straight at her head, but it was useless.
- They wrestled until Beowulf saw a sword that was hammered by giants hanging on the wall. He drew it and broke the chain on its hilt and then lifted it high over his head and cut off her head. Beowulf found Grendel lying dead in a corner and struck off his head with a single swift blow. He then carried the head of Grendel to King Hrothgar.
