- Okoye and Unoka argue over who should break the kola nut because it is tradition that the man of higher rank breaks the nut. From this it is learned that the Igbo do have traditions. The kola nut is a very sacred tradition to them.

- Yam’s were the main source of income for Umuofia. At the start of every harvest there was a huge festival that was thrown to start out the season. This was a big event and a big part of their culture. The Igbo had traditions and weren’t uncultured.

- Why have they lost the power to fight?
- Women did not have much choice in who they marry. They also were seen as ‘unholy’ if they laid with men before marriage. It was a custom that women had a price that a man had to pay in order to marry them. This is a factor of the tradition that women didn’t equate to much in the society.
- Chapter 25
- The people of Mbanta are also very traditional but in their own ways. In Umuofia nothing matters except your title. While in Mbanta the way you act and the information you know is also a key factor. Both villages are very strong in their beliefs. They both have similar traditions but also some different traditions and cultural aspects.
- When Okonkwo returns he finds that Umuofia did not fight back against the missionaries. He is angered by this. This is because when he left they would’ve fought back but they changed their traditions and now take a more peaceful approach. The missionaries completely changed the way of life in Umuofia.
- Then they came to the tree from which Okonkwo’s body was dangling
- In the end Okonkwo kills himself. This is both ironic and tragic. He does this because he is used to such power in the community and the community fighting back when something happens. In the seven years that he was gone they ran in the opposite direction of this. Okonkwo is a man of tradition so he just cannot handle this big of a change.
