- Scene 1: The Cocoa Beans
- Scene 2: The Traders
- Scene 3: The Chocolate Bars
- The first step of making chocolate: Gathering the cocoa beans! Cocoa pods are grown for five years, and after that, they are chopped with a sharp knife and they are opened. The pulp from inside the pod is placed on a banana leaf to dry until they turn into sticky cocoa beans.
- Scene 4: The Retailers
- After the pulp turns into sticky cocoa beans, they are dried under the Sun. For the beans to reach the factory, traders, mostly from Europe, take all the cocoa beans to Europe for the chocolate-making process to begin.
- Scene 5: The Workers
- Once the beans reach the factory, they are turned into liquid cocoa butter and cocoa power, they are mixed with milk or soy, and they are made into chocolate bars! Woo hoo!
- Scene 6: Fairtrade International
- But how does the chocolate reach the consumers? The finished chocolate bars are then sent to retailers for them to sell in their shops and for customers to buy the chocolate bars.
- What about the workers? They get underpaid. The amount of money they get isn't enough to sustain them for long. Something should be done about this.
- That's where Fairtrade International comes in! Fairtrade International gives cocoa farmers the right amount of money to sustain them, even when the cocoa prices start to drop. Food that Fairtrade International is part of means that whoever buys it contributes to the cause of paying cocoa farmers what they deserve. But, in 2016, out of the 2 million tonnes of cocoa produced in Côte D'ivoire, 8% of it was produced on Fairtrade terms. This issue is still out there and Fairtrade it on its way to stopping it. We should help too, by buying Fairtrade products!
