  • Mountain Men lived in the rocky mountains during the Westward Expansion. They hunted furs all year and then went to a rendezvous in July to trade. This caused many people to travel west to trade. The routes the Mountain Men used to get to Oregon and California eventually became the Oregon Trail.

  • The Oregon Trail was a 4-6 month route that traveled west to get to Oregon and California. The trip was rough and many people died. The trail let many people travel and move to western states and trade at the rendevous. The Oregon Trail was the way to the west, without it, American's wound't've expanded as easily as they did.

  • Manifest Destiny was the compelling urge to expand the United States west and claim as much land as possible. People said this was God's plan. Manifest Destiny's role in the Westward Expansion was the basic backbone of why American's claimed land in the west.
  • California Gold Rush
  • The United States annexed Texas, which really angered Mexico. So when they refused to sell California and New Mexico to America for $30 million, Americans felt that it stood in the way of Manifest Destiny. America then lied that Mexico invaded so Congress would let them go to war. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 ended the war, and America bought California and New Mexico for $15 million.

  • The Mormons were a religious group that was driven out of the east by mobs and forced to move to the west. They slowly made their way to Utah. They invented a new way of farming in Utah and planted their religion into the dirt of Utah.
  • The California Gold Rush started in the late 1840s when a farmer in California found gold in his field. In 1849, people from all over the North American continent, and the world, made their way to California to try to find gold so they could get rich. The gold rush caused people to stay in California, and then it had enough citizens to become a state in America.
