Several Ionian city-states decided to revolt against Persian Empire because this empire had conquered all of the fertile crescent that the city states needed, as well as Asia Minor.
The battle of Marathon began. The Persians landed on the plain of Marathon where an outnumbering army of Athenians defeated Persia. The Persians then returned to Asia.
The battle of Thermopylae then began. The Athens and Sparta united to defeat Persia. The Greek forcehad off the Persians for about two days. The Persians killed Leodias and his whole army resulting in the Spartans sacrificing themselves for Greece.

The Greeks came up with a plan to defeat the Persians using a mountain path. Unfortunately, the Greek had a traitor show the Persians how to use a mountain path to beat the Greek force. The Athens the abandoned their city and landed on the island of Salamis, where and outnumbered Greek fleet defeat the Persians.
The Greeks formed the largest army of the time and defeated the Persians at Plataea. The Greek had won the war and were free.
The Athens and Spartans both claimed victory over Persia and this led to problems. Sparta was left weak as the Athenians grew powerful. However, the Athens empireprospered and improved their government and had some very powerful and well known leaders.
