- Welcome to Kuper Island Residential School, Monica. The note here says you are a very bright thirteen-year-old girl--a very good student...
- Every new student at Kuper Island Residential School gets hair cut. Now, don't argue with your teachers. When I say get hair cut, you get hair cut!
- Monica gets her hair cut
- No! My hair has never been cut, never.
- The girls see their dorm for the first time
- You know Monica, I am going to hate this place.
- GIRLS! BE IN THE DINING ROOM, 10 MINUTES!
- Its going to be alright Dusty, our hair will grow back.
- Monica, I have a favour to ask of you.
- Monica gets off the boat and greets Father Maynard at the front of the school. She recounts that “He makes her sick” after he looked at her for the first time.
- Father Maynard wants Monica to join him
- Now that’s a good girl. That’s what I like to hear. You do such a good job mopping the corridor. I want you to clean up my office too.
- HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
- Sister Mary Louise cuts Monicas braids after Monica promised her mother that she would never cut them. She is heartbroken and reaches to touch her braids many times as a sign of comfort but they are no longer there.
- Dusty and the other girls torment Monica
- What’s wrong, LP? Don’t you like being called LP?
- Monica and Dusty are having a discussion about how they feel like they don’t mean anything to the school and how they don’t want to be there anymore.
- Monica sends her dad a letter
- Dear Dad,I miss you so much today. Things are okay now. I am feeling better than I was. I am missing a good friend. She left the school and moved back to Chilliwack. Her name is Vivian. She was an especially good friend to me. I hope I see her sometime. Another friend is leaving today to go home to Nanaimo. Her auntie says she can go to regular high school. Her name is Nellie and I am going to miss her too. I am working hard in my studies. I am still getting As on everything. Tell Amelia I miss her too much. And Donnie and Ronnie and Reggie.Oh, I forgot to tell you. Father Maynard was sent away for a while. I don’t know for how long. I can’t say that I will miss him.I sure miss you all.I am fine now.Your daughter forever,Monica.
- Monica is doing her chores with a friend, Agnes, when Father Maynard asks her to clean his office. Monica is scared of what might happen but even more scared of what would happen if she refused.
- Yes, Father Maynard. What would you like?
- Dusty and the other girls in the dorm are teasing and making fun of Monica because of what she has had to do with Father Maynard.
- My name’s not LP. My name is Monica. Stop it. Please stop.
- Monica wrote a letter to her father after everything with Father Maynard had settled down. She tells him about her life so far at the school (in brief) and doesn’t mention the events that transpired in her time with the priest.
- Now that’s a good girl. That’s what I like to hear. You do such a good job mopping the corridor. I want you to clean up my office too.
