One day, Romeo and his friend Mirabel went out to go to the movie theaters to watch the popular action movie “The Adventures of Black Panther”. Once Romeo and Mirabel received their tickets, they soon got their drinks and food. Afterward, they found their seats and settled down in the theater, waiting for the movie to start.
Asthe movie began to play, the film was suddenly cut-off. The film began to lag and display bright flashing lights. Suddenly, Romeo’s muscles stiffened. He lets out a small groan. Romeo then loses consciousness and starts to drool. His legs and arms then jerk rapidly and rhythmically.
Romeo is experiencing what is called a photosensitive epilepsy seizure. However, before we get into what happens to the brain during a photosensitive epilepsy seizure, let's talk about how neurons in the brain communicate.
First, dendrites receive synaptic inputs from another cell's axon picked up by receptors. Afterward, the synaptic inputs will decide whether the neuron will fire an action potential. Once the action potential is fired it goes through the axon which is covered by the myelin sheath in order to help the action potential go smoothly to the axon terminal. When the action potential reaches the synapse, the vesicles release neurotransmitters. The receptors in the dendrite of another neuron then receive the neurotransmitters.
However, during Romeo’s photosensitive epilepsy seizure his eyes, which are exposed to the bright flashing lights from the film, trigger the sensory neurons, which then initiate the interneurons to send electrical impulses down to the motor neurons. THEN BOOM LIKE A STROM (CLAP) The abnormal electrical activity causes a person (in this case Romeo) to go into a seizure.
Noticing Romeo’s state, Mirabel calls for help not knowing what to do. Luckily, in the audience, a nurse was able to realize that Romeo was experiencing a seizure and helped him recover by performing a method called seizure first aid. The nurse placed Romeo on the floor and positioned him on his side. She then placed a jacket underneath Romeo’s head to protect his head. The nurse afterward sets a timer on her watch to time Romeo’s seizure. A seizure that lasts five minutes or more is in need of medical attention.
