  • After a scuffle on the court for the loose ball, Chris and Chad are in position for a jump ball to regain possession. To figure out how high Chris has to jump, he has to use trigonometry to figure out the height of the ball in the air to figure out how high to jump.

  • 6tan31 = (x/6)6x = 6tan31x ≈ 3.6
  • 6(tan41) = (x/6)6x = 6tan41x ≈ 5.2 feet
  • If the angle of elevation is 41° and the ball is 6 feet away from Chris, how high does Chris have to jump to win the jump ball and get the possession back?

  • Chris has been on fire this game, shooting 14/17 from three-point land! He is one shot away from breaking the all-time three point shot record in a single game. Using trigonometry, he has to figure out the angle of elevation so he knows he has to shoot it to get it off the backboard and in to break the record!
