On a warm sunny day in late June the village gathered for the tragic event, the lottery. Many families children included made there way down to the town square as Mr. Summers and a few others set up the black box on the stool. People were anxious, nervous, and sad all around.
Mrs. Hutchison made her way down the the town square. As the villagers settled down and the speeches were over they began picking names. Mr. Adams came over and began to take out a pice of paper. A few names were picked but not much happened. It was calm at this point but it was about to get worse.
As people in the crowd were watching Mr. Summers picked a name and he called Warner. Warner gave a small speech then Watson got called and the area was silent. Mr. Summers held a slip in the air for a little while no one did anything. People started to get nervous, later some of the women in the crowd said "who is it", who could it be. And then Bill Hutchison got it!
Ounce Mr. Summers announced that Bill Hutchison got picked the crowd went crazy. Tessie Hutchison was furious, and Bill was silent. Tessie began to say "You didn't give him time enough to take any paper he wanted." The crowd was filled with conflict, everybody was mad. As people went on and the arguing got worse, Tessie got picked.
As Tessie was picked the crowd was rouring and people were going crazy but they wanted to finish quickly. People forgot the ritual and just wanted it to be over with and the stones were ready. Mrs. Dunbar and a few others picked stones and were going to finish the ritual as soon as possible.
Tessie was still bickering and wanted to end the lottery right then and there. She was in a big area of the town square surrounded by the villagers with rocks in hand. She was yelling and so scared and ounce again said "It isn't fair." Everyone was ready and Old Man Werner and Steve Adams were in front of the crowd. Tessie then said her last words and they went after her.
