- Holmes sends Dr. Watson to Switzerland to investigative the disappearance of a wealthy woman named Lady Frances Carfax. In Lausanne, Watson discovers that Lady Frances stayed at the Hotel International.
- Part 4
- He stayed there for a fortnight and met a couple named Schlessinger Watson sends a telegram to Holmes about his progress, and curiously, Holmes responds by asking for a description of Dr. Schlessinger's left ear.
- Part 5
- Holmes reads a telegram from Baden over Dr. Schlessinger's left ear confirms Holmes's suspicion that Dr. Schlessinger is actually Henry Peters, a vicious Australian rogue who seduces young women by playing on their religious beliefs.
- Part 6
- A pawnbroker reports that someone matching Schlessinger's description has pawned a pendant much like one owned by Lady Frances.
- Finally, Holmes realizes what is happening they make sure that the coffin is not carried from the house to be buried. They lift the lid of the coffin and find Lady Frances inside, chloroformed.
- The woman there had been talking about an unusual coffin, and Holmes also recalled that it was a large coffin for a very small woman, the idea was to obtain the necessary legal documents for the old woman and then legitimize the burial of a coffin containing the two bodies.
