That night Bob put the plan into motion. As he limped through the park, he noticed James. Bob called out, “James, James, wait up. I can’t keep up with you… man, my ankle is killing me. Last night I rolled my ankle on mile 10. James I can’t let this be the end of my running for the year. Do you still have some painkillers I can buy from you? I have to keep my training regimen if I’m going to make it to state track.” James pulled out a bag from his back pocket. “Only the best, clean Oxy this side of the tracks track star. It can be yours at the low cost of $5 per pill.” Bob replied, “I’ll take 5 of them,” as he pulled out his wallet to pay. Just then, sirens began to blare, and a voice called out, “Freeze! Put your hands in the air where I can see them.” Both James and Bob were taken into custody and got a one-way ticket in the back of a police Uber.

James and Bob didn’t stay at the station long. Bob was released shortly after giving his statement to Chief Deputy Jim. James was escorted to a rehab center to start the unpleasant process of going through withdrawals.

A year later. James looked at Bob with fury in his eyes. “I’m not going to Bob,” he managed to say through gritted teeth. “I’m just saying, I don’t want you dropping the baton as you hand it off to me because you decided not to double knot your track spikes. Besides, last week, you were one second away from the state’s 400-meter record. It’s not going to hurt you to take the extra 15 seconds to double knot that shoe.” Bob rolled his eyes, looked at the starter as he said, “On your mark, get set, go.” James smiled and said under his breath, “Go get ‘em, Bob. Go get ‘em.”
