  • The French and Indian War was a war that took place lasted from 1754 to 1763, and saw the French and the Native Americans go up against the British. South Carolina didn't have much involvement in this war, but the war did lead to the Cherokee War. The Cherokee War was a war fought between the Cherokee and the British settlers between 1758-1761.
  • Where are the British?!
  • Thirty years before the French and Indian war, the French moved into SC, most of them looking to trade fur. The British saw the French moving in and they didn't want the Native Americans trading with the French. To solve this problem, The British and the Native Americans signed a treaty that prevented the Cherokee from trading with the French.
  • What happened to our alliance?
  • You failed to protect us from the French and the Indians
  • The Cherokee, up to this point, thought that they were friends with the British. The Cherokee believed that they were on equal terms with the British, but the British thought otherwise. The British thought that they were in charge of the Cherokee, because they had signed a treaty with them.
  • The Peace between the Cherokee and the British lasted 30 years, and that peace was broken by the French and Indian war. Being allies, the Cherokee expected to receive protection from the British, but the British fail to protect them. The Cherokee liked the British, but they failed to protect them from the French and other Indians during the French and Indian War.
  • Feeling cheated by the British, the Cherokee stole horses that belonged to the British settlers. The British settlers then attacked the Cherokee, and in return, the Cherokee retaliated. South Carolina's royal governor tried to stop the Cherokee by stopping trade and taking the Cherokee peace representatives as hostages.
  • This led to the Cherokee War, which lasted from 1758-1761, and resulted in many dead Cherokee Native Americans. The treaty that ended the Cherokee War forced the Cherokee to give up some of their land. This treaty caused the creation of a boundary between the South Carolina colony and the Cherokee terrioty.
