  • *The Appearance of both Generals is not accurate*
  • We, the Union army, ask that you hand over all of the Confederacy's weapons and public property to us.
  • General Ulysses S. Grant of the Union had pushed the Confederate army, led by Robert E. Lee, away from the Confederate Capital of Richmond, Virginia. Lee and his forces went westward across Virginia, tired and hungry from all of the fighting. They tried to go south to reach the Carolina's in order to regroup, but the Union army block the way like they always do. Lee then sent General Grant a letter and asked in that letter to discuss the terms of surrender.
  • The two tired Generals decided to meet at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, to discuss the terms of surrender. Lee dressed in his finest clothing: A beautiful, gray coat with a red sash tied around it, and he held an ivory and silver sword in his hand. On the other hand, General Grant wore the clothes of the lowest soldiers in the Union army. His coat was wrinkled, his pants were muddy, but on the shoulders of his coat were the 3 gold stars of the highest general in the Union.
  • General Lee rose as General Grant entered the house, and they greeted one another. Lee ask Grant to write the terms of surrender, and he wrote them in the form of a letter. Basically, all you need to know is that it said that the Confederate army would need to hand over all of it's weapons and public property to the Union army, not counting personal weapons such as General Lee's sword

  • The meeting at Appomattox Courthouse between the 2 generals was full of emotions, Lee especially. Witnesses to the event noted that General Lee's face was full of pain and sorrow, and his head was full of anxiety. General Grant held in most of his joy out of respect for Lee, as this war had been a hard war on the both of them. The Civil War was the bloodiest Conflict in American History after all, so it was a given that signing the terms of surrender would be a very emotional event.
  • General Lee left the house shortly after 3:00 pm, and as he left the house, he didn't seemed to the Union officers standing up for him as a sign of respect. The painful war was over for the South, who had just fought a whole war and lost loved ones for nothing. Meanwhile on the other side of the war, the Union, their was celebration.
  • Union soldiers celebrate the victory over the Confederate army, and Artillery men fired their guns in celebration. Grant heard the gunshots and sent orders for them to stop right then and their. He told everyone that the rebels are our countrymen once again, and that they could show their joy at their best by not celebrating the South's defeat.
