  • Hussein expected support from other Arab states, but most of the Arab League members condemned Iraq's attack on Kuwait. Arab countries were then required to send forces to defend Saudi Arabia. Egypt, Morocco, and Syria joined the coalition forces. U.S. naval forces initiated a blockade of ships carrying supplies to and from Iraq and Kuwait on August 17. A week later, the United Nations Security Council ordered coalition forces to enforce economic sanctions against Iraq in the Gulf region.

  • The UN Security Council authorized force against Iraq if it didn't leave Kuwait by January 15, 1991. The US warned Saddam Hussein of an attack if he didn't comply. On January 9, 1991, US Secretary of State James Baker and Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz met in Geneva to seek a peaceful solution, but the meeting ended without a result. Other Arab nations also tried but failed to reach a peaceful solution.

  • The coalition's ground offensive, Operation Desert Sabre, led to the liberation of Kuwait on February 26, 1991. The following day, a ceasefire was declared by President George H. W. Bush. The war resulted in thousands of Iraqi casualties and 300 coalition casualties.
