- “I am a runaway slave trying to escape to canada. The Stevensons are hiding me hear Co escape the slave hunters, I hope you can understand. I had to leave my wife and children behind and I hope to find them again one day.”
- Character vs Self
- “I want to go and make money but it feels wrong to leave everyone behind”
- Lyddie has to fight the bear that breaks into her cabin, and she keeps her family to stay calm and that she will handle it. This scene shows a character vs nature conflict because Lyddie is fighting the bear, and trying to keep her family safe, and the bear is part of nature that Lyddie is fighting to keep out of the cabin.
- Ezekiel is a runaway slave and he is explaining to Lyddie about his life as slave, and Lyddie sort of relates to him. This scene demonstrates a character vs society conflict because society viewed slaves as property and is in conflict with them. Society was against African Americans.
- Lyddie is deciding if she wants to go to Lowell and be a factory worker. This is a character vs self conflict because she is facing an internal, personal problem because Lyddie is fighting herself if she should go and work at the factory or not.
