  • Chapter 1A desperate trade
  • Yakov, a poor fixer, finds out about a russian boy that was murdered. The murder is blamed on the jewsish community, saying it was a blood ritual. This prompts Yakov to reflect on antisemitism. He lives in poverty, feeling prisoner because of being a jew despite feeling distanced from his community. His father was killed by drunk soldiers for fun when he was born, and he has experienced hatred and discrimination his entire life, as well as many other tragedies.
  • After his unfaithful wife leaves, Yakov buys a starving horse and a crumbling wagon from his father-in-law, a peddler, who is having trouble dealing with his daughter leaving. He and Yakov have some discussions about Yakov's wife not providing children and being unfaithful, but even so they seem to respect each other enough. Yakov takes the horse and carriage and starts his journey towards Kiev.
  • After a terrible journey, night has fallen and Yakov finds himself facing Kiev. There he meets a man, whom he doesn't tell he is jewsish, who says that the only way to get to Kiev from there is by boat, but the cost is too expensive. The boat man convinces Yakov that there is no alternative and offers to trade in his horse, which seems to be dying anyway, to pay for the crossing. Yakov reluctantly agrees and, during the boat ride, the man speaks of his hatred for Jews and desire of their genocide.
