  • the rise of sumerian city-statesby owen abrams
  • farmers in the zagros foothills did not have enough food to feed everone in the mountains.the only place they could move to were the plains but the soil was hard and dry.But they found out about the flooding that took place and driven by the need for food, moved to sumer.
  • 4.3 Food shortages in the hills

  • mo one knew when the floods would come, so whenever they would plant crops, it would always get washed awaythey either had too little water or too much.how they fixed that was by making levees and other irrigation systems.
  • 4.4 Uncontrolled water supply in the river valley
  • the irrigation system was not very well made and had a lot of problems.the system would often get clogged by silt and have to be unclogged.this resulted in the sumerians having to move into bigger contries
  • 4.5 Difficulties in Building and Maintaining a Complex Irrigation System
  • the cities located upriver cut off the water supply to lower cities.the fight got so intense it led to bloodshed and killing.so all of the city-states built walls to keep their enimies out. the farms were outside the walls and the homes were inside.
  • 4.6 Attacks by Neighboring Communities
  • farmers had too much water or too little water to grow crops.the sumerians had to build complex irrigation systems which would not work in small farming villagesso, the sumerians made bigger city-states to have more food.
