Storyboard Text

  • Hubris - Hamlet is expressing his excessive pride as he ignores the advice given by Horatio saying Hamlet will lose this wager. Hamlet thinks he is a better sparrer than Laertes when he isn't, and this excessive pride results in his death.
  • Nay, good my lord,-
  • You will lose this wager, my lord.
  • It is but foolery; but it is such a kind of gain-giving as / would perhaps trouble a woman.
  • I do not think so; since he went into France, I have been in / continual practice; I shall win at the odds.
  • Hamartia - This is Hamlet's tragic error as he did the very thing he opposed most, which is killing an innocent. Hamlet's reckless behavior results in Ophelia committing suicide, and Laertes being driven mad, two pure hearted people lives ended due to Hamlet's own impulsiveness.
  • "O, I am slain!"
  • "How now! a rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!"
  • Peripeteia - This moment is the inciting incident of the play along with Hamlet's reversal of fate. After the ghost of Hamlet Sr. tells Hamlet Jr. that he was murdered by Claudius, Hamlet Jr. sets of on a journey to enact revenge upon his uncle. This discovery disrupts whatever balance Hamlet has, and sets every other event in the play into motion.
