  • Yeh. We cant pay 9 cents per gallon in taxes. We are small time producers. We can’t afford that much
  • Did you hear about the tax they put on Whiskey?
  • I have to. We have too much debt from the Revolutionary War
  • You sure you want to put a tax on Whiskey?
  • Hello Sir. I am here to collect your tax money in cash for Whiskey
  • NO. I will not pay the tax on Whiskey and especially not in cash
  • Small Producers didn’t like the tax because they had to pay more per gallon than large producers. Most small producers couldn’t afford that, so they started rebelling.
  • We tarred him. That will teach the tax collectors a lesson

  • The Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, decides to put a tax on Whiskey to pay off the debt that the country had accumulated from the Revolutionary War.

  • On September 11, 1791, Robert Johnson was was going through his regular route to collect the Whiskey Tax. He was surrounded by 11 people who stripped him naked and tarred and feathered him and left him in the forest
  • Alexander Hamilton wanted to send troops to stop the rebellion and violence. Washington decided to send a peace envoy instead. The peace envoy ended up failing.
  • The Constitution gave Washington the power to make an army.The army was made of 12,000 men. They went to Pennsylvania. There wasn’t any violence. A few people were arrested but got pardoned. Without the Constitution,the rebellion couldn't have been subdued
