Tobacco is easy to cultivate and is non perishable. It will produce the greatest profit out of all of my other crops!!!
Its easy to transport because it is not bulky and can be cultivated in tropical climate
Everybody is smoking tobacco so if we plant it we have a ready market .
Changeover from Tobacco to Sugar
OH NO!! . We cant afford this honey . We really need something cheaper alternative to sweeten the tea.
Sweetie, What are we going to do !
Role of the Dutch in the Changeover
Maybe we the Dutch can help you, have you heard about sugarcane?
NO worries, We will supply planters, teacher them how to plant it and provide you with all the credit needed to cultivate.
We need a crop that will be even more profitable than tobacco to replace it!

Negative Economic Impact Positive Political Impact
Paul don't you think focusing on planting sugar cane alone is a bad thing , what about all the other crops?
Due to the labour force needed to cultivate sugar which was in great in demand, cheap labour was needed which led to the importation of slaves. With these African labourers being imported as slaves social conditions like classism and racism developed.
Negative Political impact
Martha, Do you not think that it is unfair that all these new laws that the government is creating are discriminating against the black majority.
As knowledge of tobacco's incredible worth spread, the number of planters rose. This lead to a heavy increase in the crop's production which caused oversaturation in the market. This subsequently made the monetary worth of tobacco decrease which meant a new crop would be needed for any type of profit to be made.
All my friends that used to be in lower class are now not rich but they are not near poor and I am so confused which class they are in!
Have you guys heard about this new class that has been evolving since everyone started planting sugar cane?
After the changeover sugarcane became one of the highest crops in demand. It contributed to the economic prosperity of many European nations such as the Dutch, the English and the French.
WE LOVE SUGARCANE!!
The Practice of monoculture led to many negative results for example, the focus on the planting of sugarcane led to the neglect of other crops and led to starvation in many countries that had a rising population. Also, due to forced labour and the and the success of the sugar plantations the consolidation of power fell in the hands of the small elite.
WHAT MATTHEW THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE!
I do agree, but did you hear about Matthew who used to be poor in England now has a spot on the council?
The Sugar revolution had negative Political impacts. The new government created laws that was built on forced labour and there was barely any political representation for the black majority.
Yes they are no laws protecting the Africans considering they are doing all the work.
