- Welcome to Hist 200, India and the World. The course examines the history of India as a series of contacts with the rest of the world.
- The course is divided in three Units. In the first unit we look at India before the coming of the British, in Unit 2 we look at the British rule and the struggle for Independence. In the third unit we look at India after Independence.
- In Unit 1 we look at India before the arrival of Vasco da Gama.
- Some of the highlights of Unit 1 are the first Buddhist king who actively promoted vegetarianism. We find out about Hellenistic India and learn about the Mughal Dynasty
- There are 3 discussion questions and one multiple choice quiz in Unit 1.
- Remember participating in discussion questions is extremely important.
- In Unit 2 we learn about the British rule and India's struggle for independence. We also cover the partition here and the birth of Pakistan.
- Some of the highlights of Unit 2 include the battle of Plassey, the revolt of 1857, the different political approaches of Gandhi and Bose, and some poignant store about the partition.
- You have two discussion questions, one multiple choice quiz, and your food history assignment in this unit. You have to also write your research proposal for your final essay.
- In Unit 3 we look at India after independence. Here we take a closer look at current political problems like the Kashmir issue and the rise of Hindu nationalism.
- In this unit you need to focus on your final essay. There is only one discussion question here, so that you can work on your essay
