- Mrs Lyons learns that Mrs Johnstone is having twins, and can't afford both of them. She persuades Mrs Johnstone to give her one. She then forces Mrs Johnstone away and moves, going back on their deal.
- Edward, the twin Mrs Johnstone gave to Mrs Lyons, meets Mickey, who was kept by Mrs Johnstone, after the Johnstones were rehoused. They immediately become good friends and become blood brothers.
- They grow up together, along with Linda, who Mickey eventually starts dating, at the urging of Edward. The three become good friends.
- Mickey has a falling out with Edward as he moves away for higher education, and eventually marries Linda.
- Mickey commits a crime as accomplice to murder when his brother kills a man. Mickey was part of it because he was nearly broke, and he needed money to support himself and Linda. He goes to prison.
- He comes out of prison and, though still trying himself to wean himself off his addiction, gets a job, secretly given to him by Edward, who is having an affair with Linda. He finds out, and goes to the town hall to confront Edward, armed with a gun. He shoots Edward by mistake after Mrs Johnstone tells him thst they're twins, and is shot by the police as well.
