Vin, a lithe teenager, looked at the inquisitor from behind the thief lord. She concentrated on him, and manipulated him, using Allomancy. She soothed away his distrust, and rioted his trust and eagerness to make a deal with Camon.
Kelsier, a true Mistborn, finds Vin and rescues her from the abusive gang, led by Camon. A day after, a Steel Inquisitor kills Camon and his gang, picking up Vin's scent, and hunting down Kelsier's hideout.
Kelsier teaches Vin about her powers, and recruits her into a conspiracy to kill the Lord Ruler, a god-emperor who has oppressed the world for centuries. She joins, and is introduced to his gang, all powerful Allomancers.
Kelsier is killed fighting the Lord Ruler, but incites the skaa (the peasantry) into open rebellion, torching the city. He also leaves Vin armed with knowledge that makes her one of the most powerful people in the world.
Vin attacks Kredik Shaw, the Lord Ruler's palace, and, armed with atium, a metal that lets the user see a few moments in the future, assassinates the Lord Ruler successfully, drawing from a mysterious surge of power that she cannot replicate later.
Kelsier's team, led by Vin, takes control of the city. However, the rest of the former territory of the Lord Rule is in chaos. The later books in the series deal with that.
