  • 25 March, 1971: Operation Searchlight was the codename for a planned military operation carried out by the Pakistan Army in an effort to curb the Bengali nationalist movement in former East PakistanThe operation also directly precipitated the 1971 Bangladesh genocide, in which between 300,000 and 3,000,000 Bengalis were killed while around 10 million fled to neighbouring India as refugees.

  • March 30, 1971: The Pakistani soldiers panicked because Bangalis immersed them. They started fleeing the outposts and, took shelter at the district headquarters. By the end of the day Bangladeshi forces took control of Kushtia. The war continued next day. Bangali forces reclaimed Kushtia, and only a few Pakistan army men managed to escape the district town alive.

  • April 2: Jinjira massacre was a planned killing of civilians by the Pakistan army during the Bangladesh liberation war of 1971. The killing took place at the unions Jinjira, Kalindi and Shubhadya of Keraniganj Upazila across the Buriganga River from Dhaka.
  • Formed in mid April 1971, the provisional government confirmed the declaration of independence of East Pakistan made earlier by Major Ziaur Rahman on 26 March at Kalurghat near Chittagong.
  • April 12: Osmani entered politics in independent Bangladesh, serving as a Member of Parliament and cabinet minister in the government of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Along with Mainul Hosein, he resigned from parliament in opposition to the creation of the one party state of BAKSAL.
