- This scene is important to the story as a whole because it shows that the girl did not want The minister's family to be there. In the text it states, "Robert grunted hello, and I pretended he was not worthy of existence."(4). This demonstrates that she did not want them there and she was not going to have a fun time with them over at her house.

- He leans back and belches loudly
- This scene is important to the story as a whole because whenever her dad belches loudly the ministers are a little shocked because of his bad manners and she is embarrassed because of it. In the text, it states, "At the end of the meal my father leaned back and belched loudly "(6). This demonstrates what the girl was afraid of , her relatives not having the proper American manner's and seeming rude.

- You want to be the same as American girls on the outside
- But you must always be Chinese.
- This scene is also important to the story as a whole, mainly because whenever her mom tells her that she can be like an American girl but she has to always be Chinese, she also tells her that her only shame is to have shame and the girl learned that it is not bad to be different. In the story, it states, "You want to be the same as an American girl on the outside, But inside you must always be Chinese" and "Your only shame is to have shame"(7). This shows when her mom told her that she learned that it is not a bad thing to be different.
