- He was successful and expelled the French from Saint Domingue in 1803. Jean Jacques Dessalines declared and proclaimed the island of Saint Domingue independent and changed the name of the island to its Arawak name “Haiti”. Dessalines declared himself emperor of Haiti for as long as he lives and give himself the name of Jaques 1.

- He continued the use of labor and he also feared that the French will revolt and kill, thousands of white men, women, and children to ensure that his country was safe. Dessalines “Reign of terror” as said by some, came to a drastic end in 1806. His body was dragged through the street and then dismembered.

- Dessalines rule was taken up by Alexandre Petion and Henry Christophe who was part of his former allies but rose against him in the end. Jean Jacques Dessalines legacy was remembered for generations as he was the one person who declared Haiti as independent making it the second independent country in the Americas and also said to be the first nation to abolish slavery permanently.
