At the dinner table, 4 year old Penelope kept refusing to eat her peas. "You have to eat your vegetables. Don't you want to grow big and strong?" says Mom.
"I don't want to eat those!" cries Penelope.Penelope's mom then asked her, "What would you like to eat instead?""I want to eat something else," says Penelope.
"Ok, for dinner tomorrow, would you like to pick the vegetables to eat?" asks her mom.
"Yes! I want to pick!" Penelope says excitedly.
The next day, Penelope's mom is getting ready for dinner. She takes out new vegetables like corn, carrots, green beans, and broccoli.
Penelope asks, "What are these? Can we eat these today? I like the colors!" "Yes, we can have them. These are also veggies," her mom says as she hands Penelope a plate.
At the table, Penelope says, "This is yummy! I want more."
"I want to eat something else," says Penelope cheerfully.
After learning there are different vegetables, Penelope began to eat them more often now that she has other options.
Color the Vegetables!
Message to the parentsGetting children to eat vegetables can be a difficult task. With that said it could be helpful to try enjoyable ways for kids to eat vegetables. This book is a guide to show how expanding a child's options could allow them to like their vegetables instead of being forced to eat specific ones repeatedly. Additionally, allowing your kid to participate in the making of meals could even make them feel more excited because they have a role to take on. For example, asking your child what they would like to try or giving them more than one option for food would promote further participation from them.
