- Oscar
- A teenage girl named Marjorie found a cat with several injuries on the street and brought it to the Herriot's house. When Mr. Herriot and Tristan saw the wounds, they think there is no hope. They eventually conclude that they will save the cat, and they do successfully.
- Mrs. Herriot found a real connection between her and the cat, so she And Mr. Herriot took him in and named him Oscar. Over time, Oscar fully recovered. Oscar became a huge part of the whole family's life, including Sam and Tristan.
- Since she takes care of Oscar, Mrs. Herriot grows to become very attached to him. She feeds him every day and plays with him. Their connection grew as time went by.
- Oscar "ran away" several times. Some of the places he ran off to were the Woman's Institute, the Church house, and a dart championship. The Herriots eventually figured out that Oscar wasn't running away, he was just visiting because he loves people.
- A man named Sep Gibbons and his two twin boys came to Mr. Herriot's house. They claimed and proved that they owned Oscar before, but he got lost. The twins yelled, "Tiger, Tiger!" while rolling on the floor with Oscsar.
- Mr. and Mrs. Herriot eventually conclude that they should give Oscar back to the Gibbons because it was the right thing to do. Everyone in the Herriot family (including Sam) was very affected by this. They decide to visit the cat one night and are invited to do so whenever they wish.
