  • In an isolated town called Lanbei lived a boy, Chiang Li-Jing, with his twin sisters, Jiya-Ling and Mei-Ling. Despite their family not being wealthy, they're content with their lives. However, they have never journey outside of their village due to a rumored water spirit in a nearby bay.
  • Ni men hao! My name is Chiang Li-Jing. These are my sisters, Jiya-Ling (orange) and Mei-Ling (blue).
  • Lanbei's SpiritTaiwanese Folktale
  • You hand us everything we want, and we'll leave you all in peace. We'll give you three days to hand us all of what we want.
  • One day, a group of robbers came into Lanbei for money, but Lanbei needed the money to support themselves as a small city. To make matters worse, the robbers wanted some of the females as their xiaoqie[1], including Jiya-Ling and Mei-Ling.
  • The people of Lanbei couldn't afford to lose what the robbers wanted, so Li-Jing proposed to ask the water spirit for help. Many at first refused the offer, saying it's too dangerous for a boy at his age, but Jiya-Ling and Mei-Ling refused to join the robbers. In the end, the people allow the three children to go for three days, telling them to come back immediately.
  • It's asking a demon for guidance, but we must take this risk.[2] Hate can be embodied in spirits, but spirits can't be embodied in hate.[3]
  • Given with a pouch containing enough food and clothes for the three of them, they set out to find the water spirit in the bay. By the time they reached the bay, it was nightfall, but Li-Jing, Jiya-Ling, and Mei-Ling insisted on communicating with the water spirit. They weren't sure how, so they all pray in hopes of the water spirit hearing their wish.
  • Away from the prayers from the shore, the water spirit watched them. She hasn't seen them before and hasn't trust in any humans as she was seen as an evil spirit. Still, it reminded her of hope and despair, something she wished to see in humans.
  • The next morning, the water spirit transformed into an elderly lady before meeting Li-Jing and his twin sisters. Despite not knowing the lady, Li-Jing offered to provide her some food and rest while sending his sisters to wash one of the hanfus[4] for the lady.
